Deadlocked by Charlaine Harris

Book 12 in the Sookie Stackhouse Series

The author, Charlaine Harris, is winding down the series and reading the book, I could tell.  It was a bit depressing.  Nothing seemed to happen in this book.  There was a lot of Sookie being alone, getting ready for work, working, going home from work and very little else.  There were a few conversations with vampires, werepeople, and fae, but just short conversations with very little in depth or action going on.  I hope Ms. Harris has a few surprises up her sleeve, but I think I know where the series is going and I hope I'm wrong.

The Wolf Gift by Anne Rice

Anne Rice is back, thank God!  I wasn't too thrilled with her Christian works, but I did read them.  In this book, she takes on the werewolf myth.  She manages it to turn the werewolf myth into something new.  In her version, the wolves are driven to destroy evildoers only.  They seem driven to this.  The book is all about spirituality, the purpose of life, what we are here for.  I liked that the wolves were basically good and there wasn't a lot of moaning and groaning about being evil. 

A good read.  I liked it, but didn't love it.  It was lush, beautifully written, had a very interesting myth story, and was full of details.  I will definitely read future books in this series.

Urban Fantasy

I love Patricia Briggs.  Her Mercy Thompson Novels are on my favorites list.  The Alpha & Omega books are set in the same world as the Mercy Thompson books.  This book reads a bit like a mystery novel.  Charles and Anna are off to Boston to help the local authorities catch a serial killer.  I liked the book.  I really like that Patricia Briggs writes about couples that are married and in love, and she still manages to weave romance into the mix.  I don't like this series as well as the Mercy Thompson books, but I look forward to every new book.  Well worth reading.

Book 10 in The Hollows series

Okay, so I tried to put the book down yesterday and failed.  I finished it this morning.  All in all, it wasn't my favorite Hollows book.  There was a lot more action than I'd like.  I like Rachel dealing with her living vampire, Ivy and her Demon, mentor, Al, but there was almost none of that.  The relationship with Trent seems weird and Rachel just keeps messing up.  At some point, I'd like Rachel to come in to her own, garner respect, and figure out her relationships.  Although, I guess if that were to happen, the series would be over.  I love the Hollows world and am sad I finished the book, but I had a great day yesterday reading it.

Hit List by Laurell K. Hamilton

Book #20 in the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter Series

Well, sadly, I've finally read all the currently published books in the Anita Blake Series.  I am so sad; I enjoyed them so much.  Now, I will have to wait and wait to get more Anita fixes.

In this book, Anita is out of state on U.S. Marshall business.  She is working with long time friend and fellow vampire executioner Edward to solve the case.  There are no pack, no vampire, no pard, none of the things I REALLY love about the Series.  There is lots of blood, gore, grisly murder, and several fight scenes.  Her friendship with Edward grows and that is really interesting, but I missed all the rest of her guys.  Why wasn't she at least traveling with some companions to help her feed the ardeur?  It does get a little tiresome reading about how there is always a Marshal who hates Anita for no real reason.  That being said, an Anita Blake book I didn't like as well as the others still TOTALLY ROCKS! 

Third Grave Dead Ahead by Darynda Jones

This is the third book in the series.  I don't think there is an official series title, but they all have a number and grave in the title. 

Charley Davison is a paranormal private eye who just happens to be the world's only grim reaper.  In this book Charley has a new case to solve only she is distracted by the son of Satan, Reyes Farrow, who she loves/hates, but is drawn to despite herself.   Reyes is mad at her and is putting Charley in danger.  Charley's dad is trying to get her to hang-up the P.I. business.  Charley helps a biker gang befriending them and sparking a possible romance with the gang leader?

The book is witty and cute.  The plot is interesting enough to keep me turning pages.  I love the fact that Charley is so powerful and hasn't discovered how to use her powers.  I love the enigmatic Reyes.  A great read!  Lighthearted with plenty of supernatural elements and the possibility of romance. 

City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare

Book Four in The Mortal Instruments series.

I loved the first three books.  There was such a long wait between books three and four that I forgot a lot of the plot happenings so it took me a while to get into it.  That said, I still didn't like it as much.  Jace being so vulnerable and his refusal to believe that Clary loves his was getting a bit annoying.  I like Jace's combination of bad ass Shadowhunter and wounded soul, but enough already!  I liked Simon's storyline, but couldn't (and still can't) remember anything about the Mark of Cain.  The back of the book says it's going to be a movie--looking forward to that.  I think my daughter would like it.  Overall, the series is great.  I will read anything written by Cassandra Clare.

Blood Bound by Patricia Briggs

Book two in the Mercy Thompson series.

Mercy's Vampire customer and possible friend (she not sure vampires can be trusted enough to be true friends) asks her for a favor and she ends up in trouble.  A dangerous being is killing people and Mercy must come to the rescue.  The vampires either can't or won't help and the being affects the werewolves in a bad way.  So it's Mercy (a werecoyote)  on a dangerous mission to rescue a vampire and three werewolves. 

Mercy just keeps getting more and more interesting.  Is it possible that her vampire friend is really a nice vampire?  Is is possible he likes her?  What about Adam and Sam?  What does being a Walker mean?  I look forward to the next book.

Dead Witch Walking by Kim Harrison

The first book in the Hallows series.

I liked this book.  I didn't devour the book, but I did enjoy it a lot.  There were even a few funny parts.  I'm not as fond of books that include vampires where the vampire bite is awful and wrong and vampires are evil, but there is enough else to like that made up for it.  The Heroine is spunky and headstrong.  I will be reading more of this series.
